110 Years of History Sold

August 2008

“Glenone” marketed for the first time in 110 years, has been sold to a South Island farming family.

This farm has been in the same family since being purchased in 1898 by Jim McHardy, the founder of the Mataroa Dog Trials. Jim progressively cut the farm out of heavy bush consisting of Maire, Matai, Totara, Rimu and White Pine. He farmed Glenone until his death in 1946. The farm was managed until 1957, when Jim’s youngest daughter Betty married Trevor Bryant, and they leased the property. They purchased it in 1978 and Trevor farmed Glenone until his son James and wife Suzi purchased the property in 2002.

Pete Stratton of Bayleys Taihape reports that Glenone has sold to a family from Waitahuna about 20 kilometres out of Lawrence. Derek and Bernie Lowery recently sold their farm to Landcorp and were attracted to Glenone by the quality of the hill country and improvements. They have four children aged 14, 12, 10 and 6 years old.

Glenone is 29 kilometres from Taihape just South of Colliers Junction with two Primary schools within 13 kilometres. Comprising of 398 hectares (985 acres) and wintering over 4,300 stock units, it has an extremely attractive and extensively renovated four bedroom homestead, sitting on an elevated site, overlooking the Turakina Valley, with views to Mt Ruapehu.

Mr. Stratton says while it is the end of an era, it is great to see a young family moving into the district.
