Rare opportunity to purchase farm in Rangiwaea district

March 2011

A farm in the tightly-held Rangiwaea district, equidistant from Taihape and Ohakune, has come on the market with Bayleys.

Marketing agent Pete Stratton says Hiria is a 346ha farm located 1km south of Rangiwaea junction on Turakina Valley Road, 33 km from Ohakune and Taihape.

The farm had been in the Garmonsway family for close to one hundred years prior to being leased out in 1987, and then sold privately to the lessees in 1993.

Mr Stratton comments that he can’t recall the last time a farm near Rangiwaea junction was made available to the public.

“The closest I can recall was Kowhainui Station, a 986 hectare property down at Colliers Junction which sold after auction in 2007 to a local farming family. However, farms closer to Rangiwaea are extremely tightly held by local families, a testament to the strength of their soils, a kind climate, and proven productive capacity over a long period of time, says Mr Stratton.”

“The region has an enviable reputation for producing exceptional quality livestock.”

Mr Stratton describes the farm as mainly easy and medium contour with soils dominated by ash and rubbly papa. The eastern side is mainly yellow brown loams on Tongariro tephra, while the western side soils are described as fertile hill soils formed on jointed mudstone (rubbly papa).

These soils are suitable for a variety of livestock options including breeding, intensive stock finishing and dairy grazing. With over 40 conventionally fenced paddocks, Hiria provides a range of opportunities and flexibility for the lucky purchaser.

Mr Stratton describes the water availability on the farm as absolutely exceptional.

“The property features large dams with over 6ha of water storage, along with the upper reaches of the Turakina River which run through the property. These provide an unlimited water source with potential to extend the reticulated system to encompass the whole property.”

A four bedroom home on a fantastic site provides extensive views to both Mount Ruapehu and the Ruahine Ranges, and the Rangiwaea Primary School with a roll of 28 pupils is located only 500 metres from the farm.

Mr Stratton says Hiria has a Rateable Valuation of $2.24 million, and will be attractive to a wide range of farmers either as a stand alone unit, or as a finishing block for larger breeding properties.

The farm is being marketed by Bayleys with offers closing Thursday 5th May 2011.
