Historic Taihape Sheep and Cattle Farm sells for more than $2 million

April 2005

“Donmore,” an historic Taihape sheep and cattle farm which has been owned by the same family for more than 100 years, has  sold at auction for $2,110,000.

Selling agent Peter Stratton, of Bayleys Taihape office, says there was considerable local interest in the property as well as a number of inquiries from the Wairarapa.

Mr Stratton says a Taihape family outbid four other parties to secure the property for more than double its 2003 Capital Valuation of $850,000. He says the O’Taihape Club was packed for the auction.

“The auction method of sale enabled the vendors to achieve the best possible return on this historic property.”

The 197 hectare Torere Road property is located ten kilometres from Taihape itself. It consists of a mixture of easy, medium and steep hill country and has panoramic north and easterly views to Ruapehu and the Northern Ruahines.

Currently, the farm is running 2,500 stock units.

It contains a comprehensive range of farm buildings including a four-stand woolshed and covered yard, three-bay truck shed plus a variety of well maintained vehicle sheds and two hay sheds with 500 bale capacity.

Mr Stratton says there is a good network of four wheel drive tracks to all of the 22 main and six holding paddocks, which allows easy downhill mustering and stock movement. The main dwelling is a large character homestead built in 1916 set in 1.5 hectares of park like grounds and woodlands.
